Upcycling volunteer transforms ReStore furniture

Feb 1, 2022

Habitat ReStore’s offers shoppers an eclectic selection of kindly donated new, gently-used and upcycled items. Our Panmure and Pukekohe Restores often sell beautiful pieces of upcycled furniture. Items in need of a fresh coat of paint or a bit of love are transformed by our volunteers, also referred to as ‘Upcycling Champions.’

Wendy (waiotaikifurniture) has been upcycling at our Panmure ReStore for the past two years. She has a particular interest in vintage furniture and finds satisfaction in restoring old pieces, “I like upcycling because I like being creative and getting a bit funky. It is also stopping items from going into the landfill.” Sustainability is a key aspect of our ReStores with upcycled furniture, our Rags to Bags initiative and The Pallet Project. “Charity shopping is a good way to find quality stuff at affordable prices. In the shops you tend to get a lot of mass-produced items,” said Wendy.

Wendy shared her thoughts about volunteering, “It’s a lovely place to work. Because I work at home, it’s nice to have companionship. Come and give volunteering a go. Don’t worry about being perfect, just do the best you can.” Whether you’re a keen upcycler, enjoy helping in retail or want to help with admin support, there is a place for you at Habitat.
