Trish gets new curtains for a warmer, drier home

Mar 10, 2020

Here’s Trish from Manurewa with her new curtains installed by Habitat Auckland’s very own Pablo.

Through our Tō Kāinga Whare (TKW) Programme, we were able to provide curtains and minor repairs to her home. The TKW Programme, formerly known as Minor Repair Service, is a collaborative partnership with Auckland Local District Health Board (DHB) hubs Kainga Ora and National Haurora Coalition to help address acute health issues that can be attributed to a cold, damp living environment. The vast majority and families supported live in rental housing.

Habitat receives referrals from hubs, undertakes a home visit and then provides the following free interventions for the householder as required:

  • Home assessment and tenant advice
  • Bubble wrap for windows
  • Full length and lined curtains
  • Draft stopping for windows and doors
  • Heaters
  • Spray bottles for treatment of black mould

A healthy homes report is sent to the landlord, identifying which ‘minor repairs’ Habitat can perform under the service and which are solely the landlord’s responsibility (such as insulation). Habitat’s Landlord Liaison Officer then follows up with the landlord to support both the needs of the family and support the landlord to improve the property.
