Build Back Safer

Through our Build Back Safer (BBS), we’re working with Pacific communities to build the skills needed to identify shelter risks and rebuild disaster resilient shelters using local knowledge and technologies.

Our main goal is to reduce disaster risks and enhance resilience through a safer and well-adapted built environment. Our approach is always to understand the needs of the community first and work with local partners to develop a plan for what needs to be done.

In 2021, Habitat for Humanity volunteers worked alongside community members across the Pacific to build long-term housing resilience. 724 community members in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa completed Build Back Safer training, and 894 completed Participatory Approach to Safe Shelter Awareness programmes. These programmes empower communities to localise local knowledge and resources to strengthen their shelter resilience, so they can better withstand future severe weather.
