Progressive Home Ownership

Habitat NorthernHow we help

Homes available, seeking families now

Has owning your own home seemed out of reach?

Habitat’s rent to own model supports working families and couples; first time buyers or second chancers to make homeownership a reality.

Habitat currently has eight affordable, brand new, two-bedroom homes in Māngere East, and we are looking for potential homeowners to move in this year.

What does this mean for you:

  • No deposit required
  • Interest costs are 50% lower than commercial banks loans
  • Each rent payment will go towards the payment of your own home
  • Close to a range of amenities including a supermarket, school, parks, library and public transport links.

What’s the catch:

  • Maximum of four occupants per home (will suit couples or small families)
  • You have not owned a home before or have experienced loss of a home through separation or other circumstances
  • You must be willing to partner with Habitat for at least five years
  • Ideally live locally or have a connection with the area
  • You must be legally able to purchase a home in New Zealand

Housing affordability is a huge issue in Auckland, and these opportunities are rarely available.

We are encouraging all interested people to fill in our short form by Friday 3rd May so we can assess your eligibility and affordability.

If you are successful to move to the next stage, our team will call you to have a more in-depth discussion.

Take the chance to change your future and become a Habitat homeowner.

Introduction

Habitat for Humanity is a registered housing charity and Community Housing Provider. As part of our housing provision we provide a Progressive Home Ownership (PHO) Programme supporting working families into home ownership.

Our programme is based on a Rent to Own model, where families are selected through an application process. Under the terms of the programme families pay an affordable rent, paying down the purchase price of the home over time until they can afford a commercial loan from the bank and purchase the home from Habitat. The price of the home is set an affordable level and all equity gained from time of occupancy is transferred to the homeowner. No initial deposit is required. Over the past 25 years Habitat has helped over 550 families into home ownership through this model.

Applicant Criteria

Applicants are encouraged to apply or contact us for more information if you meet the following broad criteria.

1. Have a strong desire for home ownership and partnership through this process with Habitat.

2. Cannot access current market priced housing, due to either household income and / or lack of deposit.

3  Can afford to pay a market rent.

4. Have stable work and a stable household income.

“This settlement is a big milestone. We are over the moon. When we moved into our home it felt comfortable. Everything was good, from paying the rent to having maintenance done on the house. Habitat looked after us. I contributed to whatever they required; my help, my experience, and expertise. We can stand up on our own feet and find our own way.”
