About the Programme

Habitat for Humanity Nelson is a not-for-profit organisation working to provide decent, affordable housing for families in need. We are currently seeking applications from local families who live in the Nelson Tasman region who are interested in partnering with us to build a home via our Progressive Home Ownership programme.

Through our Progressive Home Ownership (PHO) we partner with whanau and individuals locked out of the private housing market. Families occupy a new home built by Habitat Nelson, and pay the equivalent of fair market rent determined by their total gross household income. This programme allows local households to enter an affordable rental programme with secure tenure for at least five years, until refinancing and taking ownership of their own home.

Wakefield Development

Thanks to our partnership with NMIT, we built 3 x 3-bedroom stand-alone homes and we relocated them to 71 Whitby Road, Wakefield.

How do you Apply?

Applicants need to have a genuine housing need, and do not qualify for a conventional mortgage. Additionally, regular paid employment will be required, due to the values of these homes. Only applicants who live in the region will be accepted.

Please note, attending our info meetings prior to application is mandatory. We explain what is our programme about and provide the application packages with the form to apply.

Info meetings were held in March 2023. Deadline for applications from all attendees of our previous info meetings was April 14th 2023 at 4pm. All successful or unsuccessful applicants were notified by the end of May 2023.

If you have any questions, please contact Tor Kiore, Support Services Coordinator, at 022 135 2922.

Paul’s Story

Local family of six were living in a Tipahi St house owned by the health board when Paul saw an ad from Habitat for Humanity Nelson and applied for Progressive Home Ownership. That led him to their first Habitat home and ten years later, they are on their third, a lifestyle block at Hira.

We wouldn’t be able to afford a home without a help from Habitat Nelson,” adds Paul.

Tammy’s Story

After years of living in a cold and damp homes and chronically sick children, Tammy and her family finally have a place to call their own after partnering with Habitat through our Progressive Home Ownership programme.
