A new home completed in Tonga shows what it truly means to ‘Build Back Safer’.

After being displaced by the devastating tsunami in 2022, a family in Patangata, Tonga, now has a roof over their head for the first time in three years. After living in a tent without adequate water and sanitation, the partnership between the community, Live and Learn Tonga and GWA Group, who have donated plumbing supplies, has meant this family is finally able to move into a safe, decent home.

Habitat’s Build Back Safer (BBS) programme teaches construction, basic plumbing, and home maintenance skills to community members. These trainees then put their new knowledge into action, building structures like the one now providing a stable home for this family.

“After living in a tent for three years since the eruption, this support has truly changed our lives,” says a family member.

Patangata is a low-lying community prone to flooding in certain areas. To safeguard against future risks, the new home has been elevated to ensure it remains safe and dry. It also features cyclone strapping on the roof rafters and window shutters to protect glass and indoors in extreme weather.

The house is equipped with reliable water systems and new toilet facilities, promoting better health and safety for the family. A shower head and sink, generously donated by GWA Group, now complete the bathroom, offering a touch of comfort and dignity that this family has been without for far too long.

GWA’s large donation of bathroom and plumbing items are being used in projects across Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga.

"We are so grateful for the donations from GWA Group New Zealand,” says Alani, Director for Live and Learn Tonga.

“Their donated plumbing items have helped us in our current projects for water and sanitation, installation of sinks and toilets for homes. We will also be using the other items to help people living with disabilities in their homes.”

The close partnership with Live and Learn Tonga and Patangata community, combined with the support from GWA Group and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, have created a new life for this Tongan family.
