More than a dream come true

Selwyn Vaile Court resident

Selwyn (68) was the first resident to move into one of 10 new one-bedroom affordable rental homes for pensioners in Cambridge’s Vaile Court in July. It’s a move he describes as “massive” – not in terms of distance, but of the impact his new home has already had on his life.

For seven years prior, Selwyn was living in a single room in a Hamilton hostel. He had his own small bedroom, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. After a month of living in his new home, he describes feeling free – free of stress, free to have family to stay, free to live life his way.

“I feel like I’m on a dancefloor, I float around the kitchen. Cleaning the house is a pleasure, I feel so relaxed – I can put everything in its place. I reflect back and think ‘man, I couldn’t do that in my little room’.”

Selwyn is familiar with Cambridge, having lived and gone to school here when he was younger. With family located in nearby towns, it’s easy for them to visit him at home. He’s excited about the possibilities his new home brings – like having his grandkids come to stay.

“I’d say it’s a dream come true, but it’s more than that. It gives you peace of mind, relaxation, all those things that you think about when you’re in a cramped room. It just opens up your mind to what you can do.

“The biggest stress is, what do I do now I have everything I ever wanted? I just sit there and admire it all.”

Habitat is all about creating homes, communities, and hope, and there’s a growing sense of community among the new Vaile Court residents. In August, Selwyn had the opportunity to get to know his neighbours over a cup of tea, scones, and a series of quick conversations at a speed meet-and-greet event.

The Vaile Court units are owned by Waipā District Council. Habitat for Humanity Central Region manages the tenancies, with residents chosen from the social housing register.
