Habitat's Largest Public Housing Development Officially Opens

Habitat for Humanity Northern has officially opened the largest housing development in Aotearoa, featuring 22 Public Housing homes in Whangārei. This project aims to provide warmth, safety, and security to local whānau currently living in emergency and transitional housing.

With over 600 people in Whangārei and 25,527 nationwide on the Public Housing Register, the need for such developments is clear.

These homes exceed building code standards, boasting enhanced insulation, robust materials, and solar panels, which will reduce energy bills by around 50%.

In addition to the homes, the development includes a community hub with a kitchen, bathroom, and event space, an outdoor barbecue area, and a children's nature play space.

At the opening event, attended by over 150 people, Habitat Northern CEO Conrad expressed gratitude to everyone involved over the past two and a half years, highlighting the hope and stability these homes will bring to the community saying, “The power of what you have all helped achieve here, the hope that you have given so many people who need the stability and security so that they can thrive, and we thank you for sharing our aim for the highest possible outcome.”

We have now welcomed whānau into their new homes, providing them with much needed security, safety, and stability for them and their children to thrive.
