Nepal Earthquake Homes destroyed in Karnali province

The 6.4 magnitude Earthquake in the Karnali Province of Nepal is now considered the most devastating earthquake to impact the country since the 7.3 Magnitude earthquake in 2015 by Habitat for Humanity Nepal.

Recent reports from the NDRRMA (National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority) have revealed that over 35,700 homes have been damaged with over 25,000 people needing assistance. As winter starts, this number is expected to grow to 1.5 million.

Habitat Nepal is active on the ground in the Karnali province, helping meet the shelter needs of displaced families and Habitat New Zealand has pledged NZD $28,800 to support the long-term recovery of affected areas. This is possible thanks to several generous donors, and we hope to increase this amount as momentum for recovery continues.

Habitat has been active in the region for 40 years and is well-positioned to respond to meet basic and shelter needs of internally displaced families in the short and medium term.

Support from New Zealand will aid immediate life-saving efforts through distribution of Emergency Shelter Kits (ESKs) with portable disable-friendly communal toilets, Winterization kits (blankets, mattresses, and shawls to keep warm), and rubble removal with the help of volunteers.

As displaced families worry about the upcoming winter, Habitat Nepal will also provide Transitional shelter to get them through the cold season and Communal toilets so that women, children and elderly have clean and safe sanitation facilities.

As a direct result of Habitat New Zealand’s donation, 90 families will be supported with Emergency Shelter Kits (ESKs) and winterization kits. If you would like to join us in supporting the people of Nepal recover from this destruction, click here to donate.
