Empowering Whānau: Habitat Northern's Commitment to Healthy Homes at Waitangi Celebrations

Waitangi 1

Habitat Northern proudly attended the Waitangi celebrations for the second consecutive year, this time with a clear focus on empowering whānau with practical tips and skills to keep their homes healthy.

Through our extensive repair work across Northland, we’ve seen firsthand the pressing need to upskill the community in home repair techniques. With the overwhelming demand for major repairs and the quality of existing housing in the region, we recognise the importance of equipping families with the knowledge to care for their homes.

In partnership with Hāpai Te Hauora, Māmā Neke Maunga, Hospice Northland, Wot Matters, and 155 Whare Āwhina, we created a dedicated space for whānau to connect with health providers, take a break from the sun, and learn practical, hands-on skills.

Our team demonstrated everything from simple wall repairs to healthy homes practices, engaging directly with the community to share valuable insights on maintaining healthy, affordable homes. One whānau member shared how it previously cost her over $100 to fix a hole in her wall, but after learning the DIY tips from our team, she now knows she can fix it for just $10.

Habitat is proud to support all New Zealanders, while also learning and hounoring tikanga Māori. Our time at Waitangi reinforced the manaakitanga of the Northland community, and we look forward to continuing to engage with whānau at future events.
