Habitat is delighted to be able to support Living Waters emergency housing by making essential repairs to the site’s bathroom, rebuilt to house two toilets and two showers, including access for disabled persons.
Wiremu Te Taniwha from Living Waters got in touch with Habitat regarding support of their plans to increase the emergency accommodation services they have been providing on the island for some time. “We saw first-hand the amazing work Wiremu and his team are doing in supporting the community on Waiheke and local people in need of food and shelter, we were able to identify ways we could help through our Home Repair Programme, by assisting with essential and urgent repairs needed to the facilities,” said James, Habitat Building and Development manager.
“On Waiheke, homelessness and the need for further emergency accommodation is apparent,” says Wiremu. Even more so since the pandemic. “If we could house more people now, we would. All our social service agencies are seeing difficulties, and the sooner we can get things finished here, the better.”
An ailing septic system at the island’s sole emergency housing complex will soon be renewed thanks to community support and a $100,000 grant from Foundation North. Living Waters are also looking to apply for building consent to develop further.
