Reflections on 100th New Zealand Golf Open – by Alan Thorp, Deputy CEO

Mar 14, 2019

Recently, I had the opportunity to represent Habitat for Humanity New Zealand as charity partner of the 100th NZ Golf Open in Queenstown. Along with our Finance Manager, Mahinda Herath, we were also accompanied by a couple of our major supporters.

It was a great opportunity to raise awareness on the issue decent housing to the golfing community and millions of fans who tuned in live!

The other major highlight for me was the generous support that we received from Hyundai New Zealand. This year Habitat was among three charities selected to be in the running to win a Hyundai Santa Fe, if any golfer sank a hole in one on hole 10.

Unfortunately, no one was able to sink a hole in one. However, Hyundai split a donation of $10,000 between the 3 charities based on the number of votes we received. Habitat received $2,000 based on receving 18% of the votes.

Next year we are looking forward to deepening our connections within the golfing community, to continue to raise awareness about the need for decent housing for families in New Zealand and around the world.
