My experience as a Habitat for Humanity Global Village volunteer

Feb 1, 2017

I first got involved with Habitat for Humanity Global Village builds in 2009, when I was asked by a friend to sponsor them. Without thinking, I replied saying I would like to join the build. I was keen to share in the joy of giving a family not just a house, but a home – something meaningful that will last a lifetime. A decent, stable family home means better health prospects for the family, as well as better education, that leads to better job prospects.

Joining a Global Village build gave me the chance to work with people from a variety of other countries and to have an experience that has changed my life forever. So far, I’ve been to Cambodia on three builds. More recently I had the absolute pleasure of building in Chitwan, Nepal. To work out in the jungle where the locals travelled by elephant was something I never thought I would experience!

In each build the recipient family works alongside you, helping to build their new home. The joy on their faces as their home goes up is the most rewarding part of the journey. When the house is completed, we have a small ceremony with the family where the keys are handed over and many tears are shed. It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to make such a difference.
