Habitat attends Waitangi Day Housing Expo

Feb 15, 2024

We were honoured to be invited to the Inaugural Waitangi Housing Expo, hosted by the Waitangi National Trust over the Waitangi weekend.

The Expo bought suppliers, agencies and exhibitors and housing-related stalls together to accelerate housing outcomes across Tai Tokerau and Aotearoa, as well as showcasing real solutions to housing challenges to the wider public. The Habitat team and ALine to showcased a modular, transportable and very liveable home that can be used on sites with no access to infrastructure, an all too common issue in our region.

The Expo also enabled significant exposure to the work that kaupapa Māori providers and others are undertaking, at both a political and public level.

As Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Chris Bishop and Tama Potaka toured the site, the message from all parties to government was clear. Our sector has developed significant capacity and pipelines across a range of housing tenures. We trust that this will be further enabled through improved access to capital and grant funding, so we can continue the momentum and give more people genuine hope of a decent place to live.

Congratulations to the team at Waitangi National Trust, who put the whole event together in 8 weeks, and delivered a beautiful and engaging space for people to talk directly with organisations that can advise and support their housing aspirations.
