Tonga Disaster Appeal
For every dollar donated – Home Foundation will donate another dollar
On January 15th 2022, underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai violently erupted, subsequently causing a devastating tsunami to strike Tonga. This disaster has threatened livelihoods and access to safe, decent homes for Tongan families.
Habitat for Humanity New Zealand has worked with in-country partners in Tonga for years, responding to the disasters that strike the region and we are committed to doing the same in the wake of this event.
Habitat has partnered with the Tongan Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) to enhance local community knowledge in Build Back Safer (BBS) methods and their second-year carpentry students will help to build up to 12 houses for vulnerable families whose homes have been severely damaged by the January tsunami.
The Home Foundation has recently been on the ground in Tonga to support and train the TIST students in a transfer of technical skills. This support from the Home Foundation will be invaluable as the carpentry students undertake the rebuild as well as for the future shelter-resilience of their community.
Thanks to kind and generous donations we can continue to work alongside Tongan communities to rebuild their homes and their lives.
We will be working closely with our partners to respond to this devastating disaster, to reach the most vulnerable communities in need of vital repair work to their homes and sanitation facilities.
Thanks to kind and generous donations we can work alongside Tongan communities to rebuild their homes, and their lives.
